Have you ever wondered where the Los Angeles Lakers got their name or even what dictates when they wear purple, gold, or white uniforms? Founded in 1947, the Lakers have been LA’s National Basketball Association home team since 1961 and serve as the NBA’s first West Coast team.
Seeing as the Lakers began their fortune in Minneapolis, Minnesota (Land of 10,000 lakes), they kept their name even after moving to the West Coast and have since expanded their legacy to be known as “one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA”, with 16 championships and an estimated overall worth of $900 million!
When the Lakers play at home in their beloved Staples center, you can expect to see the team members running up and down the court in gold jersey shirts and shorts with purple names and numbers; however, when the team plays away games, they play in purple uniforms. On Sunday’s and Holidays, you will see the team in white uniforms and for special edition NBA Noche Latina events, the Lakers wear jersey’s with the words “Los Lakers” running across their chest. Since the 1999-2000 season, the Lakers have worn the same uniform style, white numbers with purple trim for both the gold and purple uniforms.
The Los Angeles Lakers (17W-14L) have four games in the coming week against the Suns, Trail Blazers, Mavericks, and the Thunder. It was Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers where Los Angeles Laker, Kobe Bryant passed Shaquille O’Neal as the 5th All-Time Scorer in the NBA. It was an initial 3-pointer that was later changed to 2 after a play review, in the 2nd quarter that officially took him to a total of 28,597 points and led him to surpass the long-time legend, Shaq.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com, Bryant was honored to be the new 5th All-Time Scorer in the NBA.
“To say it’s a huge honor would be an understatement,” Bryant said of his new achievement. Although, he was pleased with his new record, he was thoroughly disappointed in the loss that night against Philadelphia.
“I just want a No. 6 man…Just give me a sixth ring, damn it,” Bryant said in response to his new record and the loss that night. With a 14-11 season and an unimpressive road game of 3-9, Bryant just wants to push for the chance to get his sixth championship ring.
Wilt Chamberlain (31,419), Michael Jordan (32,292 points), Karl Malone (36,928 points), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387 points) round out the new top 5 spots. Shaquille O’Neal finished 19 seasons with a career of 28,596 points and congratulated Kobe on his latest achievement.
“I want to personally congratulate Kobe on being the greatest Laker ever,” O’Neal told Stephen A. Smith of ESPN. “He told me when he was 18 years old that he’d go down as the greatest Laker ever, and one of the greatest players of all time. And he wasn’t lying.”
It’s not doubt that Kobe Bryant is considered one of the greatest NBA players, but now it’s time to focus on the rest of the season and working towards another championship. The Los Angeles Lakers have to step up their game in the coming weeks in efforts to get to national title status. They’ve got to improve their road game and continue to improve their overall record. Bryant seems focused on this more than ever.

It’s no surprise that the Los Angeles Lakers are a staple of the NBA league. The Lakers and a chance at the national championship almost always belong in the same sentence. Nothing has changed this year. The Los Angeles Lakers are held to high standards from their management team because they have the ability to achieve greatness, so when a series of losses comes their way or a bad road game takes a toll, the Lakers feel the pressure more than ever.
Especially with the moves and trades made last season, the Lakers know they must win or risk the chance of being traded. With a 13-9 record thus far, they’re definitely still working to prove that they are national championship worthy. With a six-game road trip ahead of them, they’ll look to improve their 2-7 record away. Lakers center, Andrew Bynum is well aware of the pressure they are under and the necessity to perform.
“We need to prove that we’re able to win, or else they’re going to start doing things,” Bynum says, according to Dave McMenamin from ESPN.com. Dr. Jerry Buss and Jim Buss, owners of the Lakers dish out nearly $88 million in paychecks, so with that comes the expectation to win.
Coming off of a 33-point victory against the Charlotte Bobcats this past Thursday, the Lakers are hoping to keep up the momentum and bring some victories back to Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant agrees that winning is a must.
“We just got to do our job…go out, play hard, play physical and rebound the ball,” Bryant said on how to win on the road.
Their first road game is tonight against Denver and ends on the February 12th against Toronto. After that they’ll come home to face Atlanta. We’ll all be watching as they take on some big games but also take on travel and the road game, itself.
No matter if you’re looking for Lakers tickets in the Los Angeles area or in one of their road game destinations, Drew’s Tickets has the best price and seats on Los Angeles Lakers tickets. To get some cheap Lakers tickets or to sell your own, give us a call at (818) 574-7815.

The Los Angeles Clippers are a team that often takes a shadow to the beloved Los Angeles Lakers but they’ve had quite a start to their 2011-2012 season. With a 7-5 start and a full week of big games, the Clippers are a team you just might want to give some attention to. Here’s some of the latest Clippers news:
- Reggie Evans Joins the Team: On December 22, the Clippers announced that they signed free agent Reggie Evans, formerly of the Toronto Raptors. Evans, who averaged 11.5 rebounds last year, was ranked as one of the top ten rebounders in the NBA for six consecutive years. He stands at 6’8” and has played nine seasons in the NBA.
- Clippers Acquire Chris Paul: In addition to hot-shot rookie Blake Griffin and star Chauncey Billups, the Clippers now have four-time all-star Chris Paul on the roster. Paul was Rookie of the Year in 2006 and has averaged 18.7 points and 9.9 rebounds a game during his six-season career. Paul is also considered one of the NBA’s best defensive players, having led the NBA in steals for four years. Chris Paul could be what Clippers need to secure a winning season.
- Chumash Casino Resort Announced as Official Presenting Sponsor: Though the Chumash Casino Resort has sponsored the Clippers for the past three years, this year marks its first year as an official presenting sponsor. This augmented partnership means more media exposure, great business opportunities, and a chance for lucky fans to win up to $30,000 per home game!
